TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Jannik Sinner (1) meets Egor Gerasimov in the Round of 16 on Thursday September 30th, 2021.
Top seeded Jannik Sinner will have his eyes firmly set on winning his third ATP title for the year here at the 2021 Sofia Open. After receiving a bye in the First Round he will face Egor Gerasimov for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. The Belarusian has been in poor form lately and it will take quite the performance for him to have any chance of causing the upset here. Can he dig deep and come away with the win here in Sofia?
Jannik Sinner is the number one seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #14 on the ATP Tour. The young Italian sensation has built up a reputation as one of the most promising young players on the circuit and has backed that up by already winning three ATP titles. Two of those have come this year and he will be seeking his third here in Sofia. After lifting the trophy in Washington in August he has been quite inconsistent and will be hoping to finish the year with a bang. The draw has been kind to him and he has an excellent chance of going all the way here, with his explosive baseline game being well-suited for this quick indoor surface. He is the big favorite here against Egor Gerasimov and will like his chances of advancing here.
Egor Gerasimov is currently ranked #112 and is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open. The Belarusian came through the Qualifying draw here, winning both of his matches in straight sets before defeating Vasek Pospisil in three sets. He didn’t seem pleased with the victory and was critical of his game, likely a result of his poor run of form lately. After only winning two matches over his past five tournaments his lack of confidence is understandable, and while he will have been happy to get the win in the First Round, coming up against the top seeded Jannik Sinner is likely to pile more misery upon him. Gerasimov is a very talented player with a huge forehand, but is very inconsistent at times and is the huge underdog here in Sofia against one of the most talented and dominant baseline players in world tennis.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 1-0. The Italian won their only meeting earlier this year in Barcelona, in straight sets. Given the gap in ranking and talent, I am expecting a similar result here. Egor Gerasimov is in poor form at the moment, and even when he is at his best is nowhere near the level of the world number 14. I am expecting Sinner to dominate this match from start to finish with his serve and forehand one-two punch, outclassing his opponent in straight sets. He seems primed for a deep run, and will win comfortably here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Sofia Open.
