TennisSection previews the 2021 Estoril Open as Cristian Garin (2) meets Cameron Norrie in the Quarter-finals on Friday, April 30th, 2021.
Will Cameron Norrie continue to raise his level on the clay as he looks to cause the upset and make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Estoril Open? Will Cristian Garin get his campaign off in Estoril to a strong start as he has not had to play a match yet due to a walkover in the Second Round? Both players can play at a very high level when they are on top of their game, but only one will win. Who will it be?
Cameron Norrie came through a very tight 3-set match in the Second Round, beating the Spaniard Pedro Martinez having to come back from a set down 4-6/7-6(1)/7-5. Cameron Norrie is not really a clay-court type of player, but he has been able to make it to the Quarter-finals here at the 2021 Estoril Open and he will be gaining some confidence in his ability to compete on clay. Cameron Norrie is always going to be a threat in ATP 250 tournaments in the first few rounds due to his lefty game which enables him to catch his opponents off guard. However, he will now have to ensure he’s at an even higher level as he meets a clay-lover in Cristian Garin.
Cristian Garin has not had to do any work to get here in the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Estoril Open, having a Bye to the Second Round as he is the No.2 seed, and then his Second Round opponent, Richard Gasquet, withdrew from the match even before it started with an injury. Cristian Garin, however, is a solid clay-court player and he will fancy his chances when it comes to making it far here in Estoril and lifting the title. I am sure Cristian Garin has been practicing a lot on the courts to ensure he is at his best for when he eventually steps on the court against Cameron Norrie.
Cristian Garin and Cameron Norrie have met 1 time before, with Cameron Norrie leading the head to head 1-0. They met on the hard courts of Beijing in 2019, where Cameron Norrie won the first set 7-6 before Cristian Garin had to retire from the match due to injury. Although Cameron Norrie has ‘beaten’ him before, I don’t see the same happening here as this is a clay court match which gives Garin more time on the ball, and he is a much better mover around the court. It might be tight just because it will be Cristian Garin’s first match at the 2021 Estoril Open, but I still expect the Chilean to come through.
