TennisSection previews the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022 as Taylor Fritz takes on Marin Cilic in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022.
Will Taylor Fritz get the win? Will Marin Cilic pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where one of the most in form players on the ATP Tour who is out of his element on the clay takes on a veteran and former major champion still keeping up with the top guys. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022?
Taylor Fritz got a very hard-fought win in his first round match, being pushed a lot more than he should’ve been pushed. Marin Cilic will not be an easy task, but I do expect him to regroup and take the win, even if it’ll be hard. Fritz is no clay courter, but he has what it takes to do so, he has a big serve that can put a lot of guys in trouble, even on the clay, and he’s a pretty consistent player with a forehand that he can put quite a lot of spin on and dictate the play with. Let’s see if he can take down Cilic and book himself a spot in the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Marin Cilic took down fellow ATP veteran Jo-Wilfred Tsonga very easily, sending him off from his very last masters series match. He now looks ahead to a much harder opponent and fellow big hitter Taylor Fritz. While Cilic most certainly has a shot here, it will be tough with the type of game he plays. Fritz struggled, yes, but his opponent knows how to navigate the clay, Cilic, much like Fritz, loves a lower bouncing and faster surface. That said, the winner will be the guy who can hit bigger in this matchup and be more aggressive as both players play that kind of style, which makes it a lot simpler for Fritz as he aims to improve his clay game and move on at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Taylor Fritz and Marin Cilic have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their first meeting came in 2017, when Fritz was much worse but still managed to get the win at Indian Wells, a slow surface. Their second meeting came pretty recently in St. Petersburg last season in the final. Cilic took that one in 3 tight sets. With this being a clay court, I doubt that in the end Cilic will be able to outlast the younger player as Fritz aims to book himself a place in the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
