Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Gael Monfils pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the number one player in the world taking on one of tennis’ most famous entertainers. Who will triumph to move through to the Round of 16 at Indian Wells 2022?
Daniil Medvedev got a very nice win in his first match to set up a hard 3rd round meeting coming up against Frenchman Gael Monfils. He served pretty well, and he just showed us a lot of vintage stuff, keeping the rallies long and chasing down every ball. While Monfils is a great player, I don’t think he’ll be too hard to beat for Medvedev unless Monfils servers extremely well which he is capable of doing, but Monfils most of the time isn’t the aggressive shot maker we see in the highlights, he does a lot of rallying and often simply puts the ball in. Medvedev will eat him up if that’s all he can do though as he aims to get a good win and move on to the Round of 16 at Indian Wells 2022.
Gael Monfils got a nice win himself over a dangerous opponent, but his next opponent in Daniil Medvedev will be much much harder. In order to take him down, he has to play aggressively, there simply is not a way to play his normal game and beat him. Monfils is fast, but how much will that help him against Daniil? Medvedev isn’t going to be too aggressive, and I simply think that Monfils will not have the consistency or the weapons to take down the number one seed who aims to move through the next stage at Indian Wells 2022.
Daniil Medvedev and Gael Monfils have met three times before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their two meetings both came before Medvedev found success on the ATP Tour, and Medvedev still was able to win one of them. Monfils is of course capable, but I think that his matchup will sort of be like with Djokovic for him, he just can’t break through unless he’s super aggressive which is just so hard to do on a slow court against Medvedev, let’s see if the world no. 1 can hold his cool and keep his spot at the top and move on at Indian Wells 2022.
