Croatia Open 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Jaume Munar Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Croatia Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Jaume Munar in the second round on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022.

Jannik Sinner is one of the headline acts at this week’s Croatia Open. The second seed will face World No. 59 Jaume Munar in a very challenging second-round match on Wednesday. Will Sinner get the ball rolling? Or will the Spaniard’s clay-court skills trump the Italian’s power?

Jannik Sinner will make his second visit to Umag to compete at the Croatia Open. His first stint wasn’t productive, as he lost in the Round of 16 to Aljaz Bedene in 2019. But that was before his career took a major path to stardom. He has since turned from a hyped-up teenager to become one of the leaders of the ATP’s next generation superstars. Consistency is a hallmark in Sinner’s game. His results have catapulted his rise into the top 10, although he remains without a title for the time being in 2022. Can he end that mini drought this week?

Jaume Munar, unlike Sinner, was in action in his first-round match at the Croatia Open. The former graduate of the Rafael Nadal Academy, came from behind to defeat Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 4-6 6-1 6-4. Munar’s aggression and his ability to take the ball early gave Ymer plenty of problems in a baseline duel which ultimately had only one winner. The Spaniard manufactured a whopping 17 break points, which was partly aided by Ymer’s inability to land his first serve consistently. The Swede double faulted nine times in the match and was broken seven times.

Jannik Sinner and Jaume Munar have not clashed on the ATP Tour. Wednesday’s second-round match at the Croatia Open will be their first official meeting. Sinner hasn’t struck a ball since that thrilling quarterfinal defeat to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The Italian second seed cannot afford to be passive in his first outing in Umag against an opponent who has played at such a frenetic pace on clay this season. I think Sinner’s quality will shine through in the end, but don’t be surprised if this one ends the other way.
