Novak Djokovic was in a race against time to beat Stan Wawrinka and the curfew on Friday evening. And the Serb did just that, clawing his way back into a highly competitive third set to win 6-3, 6-1, 7-6. Wawrinka led the tiebreak 5-3, but Djokovic’s mastery of tiebreaks this season and throughout his career meant that Stan was never safe even with the set point in sight. Djokovic improves to 18-4 in the tiebreaks this year after winning another one.

Hubert Hurkacz, meanwhile, progressed into the second week of Wimbledon for the second time. Like Djokovic, Hurkacz has won each of his three matches in straight sets, including a 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over 14th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Hurkacz has been averaging at least 15 aces per match, a massive weapon on grass that has steadied the ship even in troubled moments at the Championships. He’ll need the aces in full supply to try and keep in touch with Djokovic who is a master at playing to score.

Hurkacz did steal a set from Djokovic in their only clash on grass in 2019, and so far Djokovic believes he still has a few gears to go to in the second week. It’s the biggest challenge in all of tennis facing Djokovic on Centre Court and we can’t see the Serb encountering too many problems here.
