Berrettini came to the tournament with a huge cloud surrounding his overall fitness and match sharpness having spent the last few months nursing an abdominal injury. But a pair of odds-defying wins over Lorenzo Sonego and Alex de Minaur quickly changed the landscape in the first quarter of the draw.

Now Berrettini is an enviable candidate to potentially meet Alcaraz in the fourth round. Zverev has played just as well if not better than Berrettini and was touted as the Spaniard’s projected fourth-round opponent when the draw came out.
