TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as John Isner (6) meets Brandon Nakashima in the Final on Sunday August 1st, 2021.
Sixth seeded John Isner of the United States and countryman Brandon Nakashima do battle for the second time in as many weeks. The young American will contest his second consecutive Final here at the 2021 Atlanta Open as he faces the five-time Atlanta Open Isner. This is a classic match between the “old vs new” guard in terms of American players, who will get the win here? Can the emerging young star Nakashima get the victory and claim his first ever ATP title?
John Isner is the number six seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #35 on the ATP Tour. The big serving American has been having a very disappointing season so far in 2021, but has found form over the past few weeks, reaching the Semis in Los Cabos and the Final here in Atlanta. He has been outstanding so far this week, grinding out tough three setters over Christopher O’Connell in the Quarters and Taylor Fritz in the Semis. Isner enters this match as the big favorite due to his superior ranking, his vast experience and success at this event and the fact that these courts suit his game perfectly as they are quick and lots of bounce. However, he should be wary of his talented young opponent Brandon Nakashima who defeated him in the Semis last week in straight sets.
Brandon Nakashima is unseeded here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #115 in the ATP world rankings. The young American is one of the most in-form players on tour at the moment, having reached his second consecutive Final after his exploits at the Los Cabos Open where he lost to Cameron Norrie. Like his opponent John Isner he has had a tough path to the Final, with three set wins over top seeded Milos Raonic and Emil Ruusuvuori in the Semi-Finals. He has been serving extremely well and has an explosive baseline game but one must wonder if fatigue will be a factor here as he is not used to playing this amount of tennis in such a short period of time. Nakashima will be very confident here as he has just beaten Isner, but the mental block of losing the Final last week may still be an issue, along with the obvious nerves.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Brandon Nakashima leading the head to head 1-0. He won only last week in Los Cabos in an impressive straight sets win. However, things are different here with John Isner being a five-time Atlanta Champion, and being better equipped to handle the nerves of an ATP Final due to his extensive experience. Nakashima is breaking out right before our eyes, but unfortunately he will likely lose his second consecutive Final. During close and intense matches like Finals the person with more experience has the upper hand, and that is Isner by a long way here. John Isner will win here and become the 2021 Atlanta Open champion, his sixth title at this event.
