TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Steve Johnson takes on Ricardas Berankis in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 5th, 2021.
Will Ricardas Berankis get another big win under his belt as he aims to get himself further than anyone expected here at the 2021 Washington Open? Will Steve Johnson back up that huge win he got over the in form and much higher ranked Alex de Minaur? Both players will put on a very entertaining encounter here, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Ricardas Berankis put on a very solid victory against the much higher ranked and up and coming Miomir Kecmanovic, beating the Serbian in straight sets 6-3/6-2. Ricardas Berankis is not very well known, but he can definitely cause some troubles in the early rounds of Challenger Tour and ATP 250 tournaments. Ricardas has already made it further than anyone expected here at the 2021 Washington Open, so he will be playing with freedom as he now meets a similar ranked opponent in Steve Johnson as he aims to make the Quarter-Finals.
Steve Johnson put on a great comeback win against the Australian, Alex de Minaur, beating the No.3 seed in 3 sets 6-7/6-4/6-2. Steve Johnson made sure to maintain his composure after he lost a very tight tiebreak and he continued to believe in himself. With this being Alex’s first match in over a month, he did have some consistency and rust issues, which then allowed Johnson to chip away at his stamina. Johnson is experienced and he will want to continue impressing his home crowd as he now meets a similar ranked Ricardas Berankis.
Steve Johnson and Ricardas Berankis have met 2 times before, with Ricardas Berankis leading the head to head 2-0. Although Ricardas leads the head to head, I see Steve getting his first win against him here. Steve beat a much tougher and higher ranked opponent compared to who Ricardas beat, and I see him taking a lot of confidence and momentum from that match into this one. It will still be tight as they are similarly ranked and at a similar level, but Steve Johnson should make his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
