This is shaping up to be a fantastic Final here at the 2021 Dubai Open between two very deserving players. Garbine Muguruza and Barbora Krejcikova have been outstanding here this week and are seeking their first title of the year. Will it be the ninth seeded Spaniard Muguruza claiming the title? Or can the unseeded Czech cause yet another upset? Barbora Krejcikova has been playing like a woman possessed, causing upset after upset. Can she do it one more time? Only one player can win, who will become the champion here in Dubai?
Garbine Muguruza of Spain is the ninth seed here at the Dubai Open and has been in fantastic form for quite some time now. After reaching her second Final of the year last week in Qatar, she has done it yet again. While she has been in outstanding form in 2021, she is yet to win a title (this will be her third final) and will be desperate to win here. Other than a three set thriller against Aryna Sabalenka in the Quarter-Finals she has not lost a set, playing fantastic attacking tennis and has served extremely well. Her controlled aggression is very effective on these courts and she is playing with so much confidence at the moment. When she is in form like this she is one of the best players in the world and it will take a herculean effort by Barbora Krejcikova to defeat her here.
Barbora Krejcikova is unseeded here at the 2021 Dubai Open but has certainly been playing like a star. Currently ranked #63, she has displayed tennis worthy of someone ranked much higher and is deservedly in her second WTA Final. After this week she will break into the top 40 and will have her sights on going even higher. After upsetting Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko en route to the Final, she is playing with supreme confidence and is striking the ball very well. While she is in perhaps the form of her life, playing Garbine Muguruza is something totally different, as the Spaniard has been the most impressive player on the WTA Tour in 2021, playing five tournaments and reaching three finals. Krejcikova enters this match as the huge underdog, but will be backing herself to cause yet another upset here at the 2021 Dubai Open.
This will be the first meeting between Garbine Muguruza and Barbora Krejcikova on the WTA Tour. While the gulf between their rankings is quite large, this match is poised to be a very exciting one. Muguruza is a very aggressive baseline player, and while Krejcikova does not quite have the power she does, she makes up for it with guile and solid court awareness. She has been very impressive here, breezing through all of her matches without dropping a set. She has not played anyone on Muguruza’s level thus far at the 2021 Dubai Open, and this will be a completely new challenge for her. Garbine Muguruza has been ruthless in 2021, and will be hell-bent on capturing her first title of the year after twice losing in Finals. I don’t think that this will be quite as one-sided as the rankings suggest, but expect Garbine Muguruza to get the win and claim the title here in Dubai.
