TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Andrey Rublev (7) meets Lorenzo Sonego in the Quarter-Finals on Friday May 14th, 2021.
Seventh seeded Andrey Rublev is in yet another Quarter-Final as he continues his amazing run of form over the past two seasons. The Russian will face local hero Lorenzo Sonego in what is expected to be a hotly contested encounter between two men in fantastic form. Can the unseeded Italian cause the upset and advance to the Semi-Finals in his home tournament, the 2021 Rome Open?
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked #7 in the ATP world rankings and has truly become a superstar over the past two seasons. The Russian has been extremely consistent, winning five titles but has finally started translating some of that success into the bigger events. After a breakthrough Finals run at the Monte-Carlo Open, he reached the Quarters in Barcelona and then an uncharacteristically poor performance in Madrid, losing to John Isner. He started slowly here at the 2021 Rome Open, being taken to three sets by Jan-Lennard Struff but rebounded well to defeat the dangerous Roberto Bautista-Agut in the Round of 16. Rublev was able to overpower the veteran and will be looking to do the same to Lorenzo Sonego, who is also in great form. With his heavy groundstrokes he enters as the favorite and will be expected to advance to yet another Semi.
Lorenzo Sonego is unseeded here at the 2021 Rome Open, and is currently ranked #33 in the ATP world rankings. After a strong 2020 season he has been in relatively poor form so far this season, and will be thrilled by his performances here at his home tournament. After defeating Gael Monfils and Gianluca Mager, he stunned Dominic Thiem in one of the biggest upsets of the year. What was remarkable was his fighting spirit, saving a match point and coming from a break down in the third to beat one of the best clay court players in the world. While the Italian enters this match as the underdog, his performance against Thiem will have made everyone sit up and take notice and he is clearly not to be underestimated. He has a lot of firepower, and will be backing himself to cause yet another upset here in Rome.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head series 1-0. They last played in 2020 in Vienna, with the Russian claiming a straight sets win. While both men have been impressive here so far at the 2021 Rome Open, I am strongly backing Andrey Rublev to get the win. Lorenzo Sonego will be delighted to reach his first Masters-1000 Quarter-Final, but his run will end here. The Russian is simply better in every department and will be expected to come away with a tough straight sets win. If fatigue is not a factor, Rublev has an outside chance at claiming the title here and will continue to march on here in Rome.
