TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Reilly Opelka meets Federico Delbonis in the Quarter-finals on Friday, May 14th, 2021.
Will Federico Delbonis be able to make it 4 huge upsets in a row as he looks to make his way to the Semi-finals here in Rome? Will Reilly Opelka be able to serve his way through yet another match as he is finally finding some form in 2021? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will. Who will it be?
Federico Delbonis has just been causing upsets left, right, and centre here at the 2021 Rome Open, beating the likes of Karen Khachanov, David Goffin, and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Federico Delbonis has been continuously able to move his opponents to their weaker backhand side with his big lefty serve and forehand. Federico has been in great form all week, and he feels right at home on clay because he is able to move around the court faster than he is used to on other surfaces. However, he now faces Reilly Opelka, so he will have to be at his absolute best on his return game if he is able to get anything out of this match.
Reilly Opelka was able to maintain his composure during a very tight match against the very in form Aslan Karatsev in the Round of 16, beating the Russian in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Reilly had to save set points in the first set, and after this, he was able to get the match and the momentum going his way. Reilly has not had the best 2021 season, but now having won 3 matches in a row, something he had yet to do this year, he will have a lot of confidence and belief in himself to achieve big things. Reilly Opelka is meeting a very good mover on the court in Federico Delbonis now, so he will have to ensure his serve does not allow the Argentine to even get into a rally.
Reilly Opelka and Federico Delbonis have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. This is going to be a very interesting match in my opinion, as both of these players have been underestimated all week long. If this was on a hard court, I would have Reilly Opelka to win this match easily. However, we are on the clay courts of the 2021 Rome Open where movement is very important as well. I think that Federico’s lefty serve and forehand will actually allow him to win this match and cause another upset. Opelka is a great server, but movement wise he’s sub-par, and you have to be at your best in terms of movement when meeting a lefty.
