Hubert Hurkacz has been playing some solid tennis, reaching the SFs of Miami, putting on a show against many players. And while I do expect him to continue that success this year, that will only come after the clay season. He is no clay courter, his game is not built for it and he hasn’t had any success in the past. While he is of course a top player and can adapt, his opponent in Gael Monfils knows how to navigate the clay real well and is playing pretty decent himself coming into the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Gael Monfils has been playing some solid tennis this season, reaching the QFs of the Australian Open before playing a decent sunshine double. His next opponent is quite difficult, but on this surface he will likely be favored by many. He’s had some amazing results on the clay in the past, and with the way he’s been playing this year, I think he will be a bit of a dark horse seeing as many of the young guns such as Hurkacz will have a harder time on the clay at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Hubert Hurkacz and Gael Monfils have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their 2 meetings came in 2019, with 2 one sided matches on hard courts tying up the head to head. Hurkacz would certainly have the number on Monfils outside of clay, but on this surface, Monfils has so much experience to draw on and a good level at the moment, making him the guy to beat this match as he aims to reach the Round of 32 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
