Will Sebastian Korda cause another upset against a higher ranked opponent? Will Taylor Fritz build on his good win in the second round to get himself far at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters? The Americans have been shining in the last couple of years, and I am sure we will have a great battle on our hands here. Who will make it to the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters?
Sebastian Korda came through an incredibly tight match against a fellow NextGen star, Carlos Alcaraz, beating the Spaniard 7-6/6-7/6-3. Although Korda did play well and showed his best tennis in tight moments, I don’t think he won the match, I think he was handed the victory by a few unforced errors from Alcaraz which we were not expecting. Alcaraz was not converting the amazing amount of break opportunities he was getting, letting Korda off the hook a lot of the time. Korda will be happy and proud of that win, but he will need to improve his service holds as he now meets Taylor Fritz at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Taylor Fritz also came through a 3 set match in the second round, but this time in a less tight fashion, beating the big serving Marin Cilic, 6-3/4-6/6-3. Fritz really had to get used to the conditions in his first round match, but he seemed to find his rhythm in the second round. Fritz is a great player on clay as he is able to rally well from both sides of the court, and his serve does give him an edge at times. However, he will know that Sebastian Korda is full of confidence here at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Korda have never met before on the ATP Tour. Although Korda beat the tougher opponent in the second round, as mentioned earlier, I think he didn’t deserve the win and was handed the win by Alcaraz. Fritz will know about Korda a lot as a fellow American and he will know that he can take the ball early against his poor second serve. This will be a tight encounter at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, but the higher ranked American should see this one through.
