Will Grigor Dimitrov get a strong top 10 win under his belt as he aims to get his clay court season off to a strong start? Will Casper Ruud improve on his tight performance in the second round? Both players know they can win this match if they’re at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. Who will it be?
Grigor Dimitrov put on a great comeback performance in the second round against a fellow one-hander in Dusan Lajovic, beating the Serb in 3 sets 4-6/6-3/6-2. Dimitrov was down a break in the second set and the match seemed to be done and dusted as Lajovic was toying with the Bulgarian. However, Dimitrov found a rhythm on his backhand which then allowed him to move Lajovic into tough spots and eventually get the win. Although Dimitrov will be happy with the comeback, he cannot let a better opponent take such a lead as they will not he as forgiving. He needs to bring his best against Casper Ruud at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Casper Ruud had to fight his way through a determined Holger Rune in his first match here in the second round, beating the Danish youngster in straight sets 7-6/7-5. Holger played better for the majority of the opening set, and was even 5-4 up in the tiebreak, but a couple missed shots due to nerves saw him then lose the opening set. Afterwards, Ruud seemed to be in control of the match when he was up a break in the second, but both players kept breaking each other, until finally Ruud was able to hold his serve and win. Ruud was rusty, but he improved as the match went on. It will be interesting to see how he comes out against Grigor Dimitrov now at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Casper Ruud and Grigor Dimitrov have met 1 time before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 1-0. Although Grigor trains here a lot and is more used to the Monte-Carlo conditions, I think that his poor performance against Dusan for the first set and a half cannot give him many chances here. Ruud has a great inside out forehand which will hurt Dimitrov’s backhand on the stretch. Perhaps he can get one set under his belt, but Ruud should improve on his last match and he will get himself into the Quarter-Finals of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
