Monte-Carlo Masters 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Borna Coric Tennis Pick and Prediction

Monte-Carlo Masters 2022: Jannik Sinner vs. Borna Coric Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters as Jannik Sinner takes on Borna Coric in the first round on Monday, April 11th, 2022.

It wasn’t the finish Jannik Sinner envisaged on his return to Miami. But the Italian young gun is past his foot blisters nightmare and will be targeting a return to winning ways at the Monte-Carlo Masters when he takes on Borna Coric. Who will book their place in the second round?

Jannik Sinner did not enjoy his return to Miami last month as he was forced to retire from his quarterfinal match against Francisco Cerundolo due to foot blisters. It followed a second successive tournament that Sinner had been forced to pull out, having withdrawn from his Round of 16 match at Indian Wells due to illness a week earlier. Sinner deemed himself fit to compete at the Monte-Carlo Masters this week and he will be facing a very challenging opposition in Borna Coric.

Borna Coric, meanwhile, has been through thick and thin in the past few years. From moments of personal triumph to debilitating injuries which has seen him play 12 matches since the start of 2021. Coric underwent shoulder surgery last May. And after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, he returned to action in Indian Wells last month. But he was made to wait for his first comeback win until the Miami Open where he beat Fernando Verdasco in the first round before falling to Alexander Zverev in the next round. The Croat, once touted as a future tennis star, has a mountain to climb to reach the upper echelons of the game. Currently sitting at No. 199 in the rankings, Coric will play the rising star Jannik Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Jannik Sinner and Borna Coric have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the Monte-Carlo Masters will be their first official meeting. This should be a fascinating matchup. Sinner’s aggression and high-intensity game coming up against Coric’s sublime counterpunching skills should be fun to watch. The Italian is one of very few players who can hit through Coric’s brick-wall defence. Health permitting, Sinner should be able to handle the Croat in two tight sets.
