TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Reilly Opelka takes on Lloyd Harris in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 12th, 2021.
Will Lloyd Harris continue to get some good wins under his belt as he aims to make it higher up the rankings after some two great weeks of tennis? Will Reilly Opelka continue to find his form again as he has finally gotten some good wins under his belt? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Who will it be?
Lloyd Harris cruised through his Round of 32 match against Feliciano Lopez, beating the Spaniard in straight sets 6-2/6-3. Lloyd was originally scheduled to meet Rafael Nadal for the second week in a row, but Nadal withdrew from the tournament and next weeks tournament, the Cincinatti Masters, as well as his foot injury is acting up and he wants it to recover in time for the US Open at the end of the month. Lloyd will have been very happy that he did not have to play Nadal again because if Nadal was fit, he would have come out with a vengeance to try and get revenge for his defeat to the big swinging South African. Lloyd has an amazing serve and forehand, but he meets Reilly Opelka now at the 2021 Toronto Open, who has an even bigger one.
Reilly Opelka put on a solid performance in the Round of 32, beating the flamboyant Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 6-3/6-4. This was a very good win for Opelka because it was not won in his usual style of tiebreaks, but rather he wore Dimitrov down with his amazing forehand. Reilly Opelka has been able to find his rhythm in his groundstrokes this week, and he will want to keep working on that aspect of his game because it helps him a lot on the return, but also when his serve is not firing at its best. Reilly will know he’s beaten Kyrgios and Dimitrov this week at the 2021 Toronto Open, but he should not take Lloyd Harris too lightly now.
Reilly Opelka and Lloyd Harris have met 1 time before, with Lloyd Harris leading the head to head 1-0. Their prior match cannot really be counted as it was a qualifying match in 2017 when neither of them were as good as they are not. I think this is going to be a very tight match as Lloyd Harris definitely has the confidence that he can beat anyone now as he beat Nadal last week, but Reilly Opelka will feel like his serve and his groundstrokes are finally working together, so he can definitely get something going here. I expect a 3 setter between these two, but the difference in this match I think is the fact that Reilly is going to get so many easy points off of his serve, which will give him more freedom on his return game as he progressed into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Toronto Open.
