Will Taylor Fritz get the win? Will Yoshihito Nishioka pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most in-form players on the ATP Tour as of late taking on a tricky opponent. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Acapulco Open?
Taylor Fritz got a great win over a very tough opponent in Adrian Mannarino, taking him out 6-3 6-3. I really like his chances to continue his great form coming up against Yoshihito Nishioka. Nishioka likely can’t do much against Fritz, considering Fritz hits the ball so much bigger and plays quite aggressively. Nishioka will like the slow courts though, and Fritz was looking really shaky a few ago in Dallas, so I don’t think it will be super smooth for the top American as he aims to reach the last eight of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Yoshihito Nishioka got a hard-fought win over Feliciano Lopez, he definitely likes slow hard courts. He’s a pretty small guy with a quirky game, and also being a lefty I think he can do a little bit of damage against Taylor Fritz. Ultimately though, the matchup is not favorable for him at all, no matter the speed of the court. Let’s see if Fritz can meet expectations to book a place in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Taylor Fritz and Yoshihito Nishioka have met twice before, with Yoshihito Nishioka leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings came in 2018 and 2019, when Fritz was nowhere near the player he is today. Nishioka is also a little older, so he was in a better position. Fritz has improved dramatically, and I expect him to take this match, even if there’s a little bit of a tussle to book his spot in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
