Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has been playing unbelievable tennis this week, taking out Novak Djokovic before going on to defeat Goffin and Fritz, reaching his maiden masters series semifinal. He has an excellent shot to reach his first final as he looks ahead to Grigor Dimitrov. Davidovich Fokina is a better clay courter, and with how solid his game is and how unreal his defense has been this week, I think he’ll take away all of the offense that Dimitrov can utilize with the slow surface and his counterpunching abilities. Let’s see if Davidovich Fokina can follow up his massive win over the world no. 1 by making an incredible run to the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Grigor Dimitrov took down Hurkacz in a tight 3 set match to set up a match with a lower ranked, but tougher opponent here in the semifinals. Hurkacz is no clay court ace himself, and the match he played was really filled with lots of hard, flat hitting with loads of aggression, not typically the game you’ll see on a slow clay court such as this one. Davidovich Fokina plays a much more clay-court brand game, hitting really consistently and heavily on both wings, defending brilliantly and being able to pull the trigger at the right moments with many bits of touch and drop shots to go along with it. It’ll be quite the battle for Dimitrov as he aims to return to a Masters 1000 final at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Grigor Dimitrov have met once before, with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Rome last year, with Davidovich Fokina winning in two tight sets. I expect a similar result this time around, as ADF has simply improved tremendously, but Dimitrov has been playing at a high level this week, taking out Casper Ruud handidly. Davidovich Fokina throughout the week has shown so many bits of talent, obviously backing that up with his results, I think it’s a great matchup for him here against Dimitrov as he aims to book a spot in the final round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
