TennisSection previews the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022 as Alexander Zverev takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals on Saturday, April 16th, 2022.
Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have two of the top players in the world clashing to get on top of the other to top the ATP Tour of the clay season so far. Who will triumph and move on to the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022?
Alexander Zverev got through a brutal battle with Jannik Sinner, just edging him out in the 3rd set tiebreaker 7-5. He now looks ahead to Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of his biggest rivals as well as the defending champion. Zverev is not the favorite here, but he has a very good shot of pulling it off. Zverev will have plenty of motivation as he aims to edge closer to the world no. 1 ranking, putting him within 300 points of the top spot if he manages to lift the title. It is a good matchup for Zverev, possessing an excellent advantage on the backhand to backhand exchanges, especially where he can be incredibly aggressive with his massive serving to the backhand return of Tsitsipas. Let’s see if he can take down Tsitsipas and book his spot in the final round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Stefanos Tsitsipas got through an absolute thriller with Diego Schwartzman, going up 6-2 5-2 before going down 0-4 in the 3rd set to somehow recover it 6-4. It was the most seesaw of matches you will ever see, and a testament to the skill Tsitsipas possesses on the clay. With his big win he looks ahead to an even tougher opponent in Alexander Zverev, one of his biggest rivals. He did look vulnerable, though, making some errors off his backhand and falling pray to certain patterns that Schwartzman was able to execute so well. Zverev, with his offensive backhand, will be able to even better exploit those weaknesses, likely allowing him to do quite a bit of damage. Let’s see if Tsitsipas has what it takes to carry on and attempt to defend his title at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have met nine times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 6-3. It’s a strange head to head, with Tsitsipas winning many of their earlier meetings, but losing a couple of their last ones. Zverev has improved significantly, and it is a good matchup for him, but on the clay of Monte Carlo it certainly won’t be easy. The backhand to backhand exchanges obviously favor Zverev, and with how big he serves it will be harder for Tsitsipas to break. It’s the tightest of margins as we head into the semifinals where one of Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas fight to book their spot in the final round of the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
