David Goffin caused the biggest upset of the 2022 Astana Open as he sensationally defeated World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 7-5 6-3. The fact that Goffin mastered the win as a lucky loser made the victory even sweeter. The Belgian’s pace and consistency from the baseline surprised a beleaguered Alcaraz who always found himself playing catchup from the get go. After establishing a 5-2 lead in the first set, Goffin was pegged back momentarily, but closed out the set 7-5. It was helter-skelter sort of match in the second set, but Alcaraz was clearly way off the mark in terms of his endurance and aggression as Goffin rolled back the years to complete the upset.

Adrian Mannarino, for his part, opened up his Astana Open campaign with a comeback win over Stan Wawrinka on Monday. The Frenchman was outplayed in the first set as Wawrinka went full throttle. The third set was slightly more competitive, however, it was Mannarino who converted the only break point of the set to clinch victory.

David Goffin leads Adrian Mannarino 5-2 in their head-to-head. However, it was the French lefty who won their last encounter this year on the indoor hard courts of Montpellier. Goffin will surely be brimming with confidence after securing his biggest win of the season in the first round at the Astana Open.
