Swiatek vs Muchova Prediction

Was Iga Swiatek’s place on the final Saturday of this year’s French Open ever in doubt? The prelude to the year’s second Grand Slam suggested so, since it was marred by Swiatek losing two major clay-court tournaments against what many considered her closest challengers this season. Swiatek lost the Madrid final to Aryna Sabalenka, the woman who looked destined to end her reign in Paris and wrestle the No. 1 ranking altogether. And her retirement in Rome against Elena Rybakina only fuelled the scenario of Swiatek potentially struggling at the French Open ahead of the projected semifinal showdown against the Kazakh. That’s not been the case though, because in a twist of fate, Rybakina withdrew mid-tournament due to illness and Sabalenka was beaten by the unseeded Karolina Muchova in an epic semifinal here.

Muchova’s talents and artistry have dazzled during the fortnight, but she remains one of the most unexpected finalists of a Slam in recent memory. The Czech scored her first top-10 casualty on day one. She defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari in straight sets and she didn’t look in any real danger until her late escape against Sabalenka where she saved a match point and rattled five straight games from 2-5 down in the decider. Muchova appeared to caress her right thigh just before she served for the match and walked gingerly towards her chair. I’m really hoping she gets to play pain-free in her first Major final given what she’s been through down the years with injuries. Unfortunately for her, the woman on the opposite side of the net has made this tournament a fortress, and her grip on the title has never been tighter. It’s almost like we’re reliving 2020 again with the Pole dominating the pack and not losing a set all tournament (although she nearly lost one against Haddad Maia). A third Roland-Garros crown is Swiatek’s to lose.
