W100 Surbiton Predictions
Tatjana Maria vs Katie Swan
Tatjana Maria is playing her first grass-court tournament since her incredible run to the semifinal of Wimbleodn last summer. And what a run that was. At 35, the mother of two, is embarking on emulating that feat and getting some much-needed momentum under her belt. Maria has played a couple of three-setters already in Surbiton, seeing off Carole Monnet and the British hope Harriet Dart who had her chances of going up a break in the decider before losing the final set 6-4. Maria, with her unorthodox style, is always a nightmare opponent on grass and more so in the lower tiers where players contrastingly have low tennis IQ on how to combat her wicked slices. Swan is looking to become the British No. 1 and needs to win here to keep her hopes alive. She’s got the game to trouble the best players in the top 100 having already beaten Sloane Stephens and Paula Badosa on grass. Her power game is also going to give Maria some thinking to do here.
Best Bet: Swan to win a set (-157)
Isabelle Lacy vs Yuriko Miyazaki
If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Those words were uttered on a football field, but they pretty much pertain to 16-year-old Isabelle Lacy’s stonking win over Madison Brengle. It was the biggest win of her career and one which will take a while to sink in. This is just her second appearance in Surbiton, having qualified last year and lost in her opening round. But that has changed after her upset win over Brengle this week which came after qualifying for the event. And she got a walkover in the round of 16 after Sachia Vickery pulled out at the 11th hour. She’ll face compatriot Miyazaki who dashed Jodie Burrage’s hopes of becoming the new British No. 1 in the opening round and then saw off Eden Silva in straight sets. Lacy is still untested against the 200, so we’ll treat her win over Brengle as a one-of-its-kind.
Best Bet: Yuriko Miyazaki ML (-200)
Yanina Wickmayer vs Daria Snigur
We have another veteran vs upstart clash as 33-year-old Wickmayer takes on 21-year-old Daria Snigur. Snigur actually owns a 2-0 record against the BEglian and defeated her most recently in the qualifying rounds in New York at last year’s Us Open, the tournament which unearthed Snigur’s name to the world following her sensational win over Simona Halep in the main draw. Wickmayer is a grass-court specialist, and not many tennis players wear that tag, so we’ll take the Belgian to get her first win in this rivalry.
Best Bet: Yanina Wickmayer ML (-323)
Katie Boulter vs Viktorija Golubic
Following Raducanu’s fall from grace, there is a handful of names who could replace her in the rankings as the country’s No.1, and one of those is Katie Boulter. The 26-year-old had a tough time getting the better of Sonay Kartal. But after going 1/7 in break points in the first set, she improved in sets 2 and 3, breaking Kartal three more times to complete the comeback. Golubic had a disappointing qualifying campaign in Paris at Roland Garros, but has transitioned well to the lawns in Surbiton. She pulled off a shock win over Alison Riske, who is a grass-court expert in her own right, and then edged Maddison Inglis in straight sets – a match that could have stretched into a third set. I’m really intrigued to see what Boulter does on grass this year. She won nine matches last season including a run to the third round of Wimbledon. Golubic is a fine one-hander and fares pretty well on grass too, completely unperturbed by the low bounce. This could another nip-and-tuck that goes Boulter’s way.
Best Bet: Katie Boulter ML (-143)
