TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Brandon Nakashima takes on Denis Kudla in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 5th, 2021.
Will Denis Kudla get another huge upset under his belt against a fellow American in the up and coming youngster? Will Brandon Nakashima continue to dominate on the ATP Tour as he is making more and more of a name for himself. Both players can win this match if they come out at the top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Denis Kudla beat the very high ranked and rising star which is Taylor Fritz, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Denis will be very happy with that win because he has not been able to get some big wins under his belt recently, but the level of play has definitely been there. Denis is experienced and he will know that if he plays like he did against Fritz and raises his level even more, he can definitely compete against Brandon Nakashima. However, I think this is going to be a much tougher task here at the 2021 Washington Open after seeing the younger American’s form.
Brandon Nakashima cruised through his match against the much higher ranked and always tough Daniel Evans, beating the Brit in straight sets 7-6/6-0. The first set was tight, but Brandon used the momentum he has built over the last month to edge it, and once he had that under his belt, he just cruised and dictated play the entire time. Brandon will know he is continuing to rise up the rankings an impressing everyone, but he is now meeting a much more experienced fellow American in Denis Kudla, so he will have to be at his best if he wants to make it to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
Brandon Nakashima and Denis Kudla have never met before, with this being their first career meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Denis Kudla cruised against a much higher ranked opponent in Taylor Fritz, Fritz had not played in over a month so he was a bit rusty. Brandon Nakashima has been on top of his game over the last month, reaching 2 ATP Tour Finals and continuously making it far in other tournaments. Brandon will come in this match very confident and he does not want to let anyone stand in his way here. I expect an easy win for the younger American as he makes his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open.
