French Open 2022: Andrey Rublev vs. Federico Delbonis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Federico Delbonis in the second round on Thursday, May 26th, 2022.

Andrey Rublev will have a battle on his hands when he faces Argentina’s clay-court specialist in Federico Delbonis in the second round of the 2022 French Open. The Russian World No. 7 extinguished Soonwoo Kwon’s hopes for an upset in the first round, but is fully aware he cannot afford to play catch up in these earlier rounds. Will Rublev prevail?

After a slow start to his 2022 French Open campaign, AndreyRublev quickly recovered from going a set down to defeat SouthKorea’s No. 1 Soonwoo Kwon in four sets. Rublev, a champion in Belgrade during this year’s European clay swing, expressed his frustration at the changeover after dropping the first set in a tiebreak. Rublev smacked the ball so hard on his chair that it pinballed towards the court sweeper, brushing the top of his hat. The Russian was lucky to avoid a default and he admitted in the aftermath presser, his behavior was unprofessional. On the tennis though, Rublev was at his very best in taking the next three sets. Pound for pound, Kwon had almost matched the Russian in the winners count, but his 40 unforced errors coupled with his inability to break Rublev all match proved his undoing.

Federico Delbonis, for his part, ended Adrian Mannarino’sinterest at his home slam. In a battle between two southpaws, it was Delbonis whose clay-court prowess was on full show at the French Open. The Argentine broke Mannarino seven times in the two-hour 14-minute contest. He wrapped up a 6-1 7-6 6-2 win facing little resistance from the Frenchman.

Andrey Rublev leads Federico Delbonis 1-0 in their series. This will be their second Grand Slam meeting with the Russian coming out on top in their first one at last year’s Wimbledon. Delbonis possesses the weaponry to make Rublev’s life a littlemore difficult on Thursday at the French Open. This is why the Russian might look to expose Delbonis’ weaker backhand wing quite a lot. Delbonis’ serve is also a slight area of concern. If he fumbles as he did occasionally against Mannarino, Rublev will tear it up to pieces. The Russian should roll into Round three.
