Alexander Bublik will take on last year’s surprise quarterfinalist in Marton Fucsovics. With both players faring well in the tuneup tournaments, this has the makings of a thrilling opener. But will Fucsovics’ body hold up?
Alexander Bublik will be keen to atone for his quarterfinals disappointment against Taylor Fritz at Eastbourne. Bublik lost so routinely to the eventual champion and will make the short trip to SW19 looking to replicate or even surpass last year’s Wimbledon heroics. The Kazakh notched a fine win over Grigor Dimitrov last season en route to the third round. Bublik thrives playing on grass courts. His big first serve and powerful groundstrokes make him so tough to beat on the faster surface. So can he make it count when he takes on Marton Fucsovics?
Marton Fucsovics, by contrast, arrives at Wimbledon with a huge question mark regarding his fitness. The 2021 quarterfinalist is one those players who will suffer immensely in the ranking. Fucsovics retired from his match against Roberto Bautista Agut in Halle due to injury. It is second week in a row he has had to pull out from a match after also retiring in Stuttgart whilst playing Nick Kyrgios. The Hungarian is one of the fittest players on tour but has a history of documented injury issues. Will he recover in time to play the energetic Alexander Bublik?
Alexander Bublik leads Marton Fucsovics 2-0 in their head-to-head. Both wins were in straight sets and it is the clearest indication that Fuscovics will have plenty of thinking to do before their showdown at Wimbledon. Bublik trumps Fucsovics’ power and has a toolbox of shots to keep the Hungarian busy from the baseline. If the Hungarian is healthy, I expect him to push Bublik, but the Kazakh should have the last laugh.
