TennisSection previews the 2021 Austria Open as Casper Ruud (1) meets Mikael Ymer in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday July 29th, 2021.
Top seeded Casper Ruud of Norway will face fellow Scandinavian Mikael Ymer of Sweden for a spot in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Austria Open. Ruud is the most in-form player at the moment on the ATP Tour having won two back to back titles in Gstaad and Bastad. Can he complete his hat-trick and win the title here in Kitzbuhel? Or will the young Swede cause the massive upset and reach his first ATP Tour Semi-Final?
Casper Ruud is currently ranked #14 on the ATP Tour and is the number one seed here at the 2021 Austria Open. The Norwegian has been outstanding this season, most notably on clay where he has already won three titles and reached two Masters-1000 Semi-Finals. His powerful baseline game is perfectly suited to this surface and his elite movement makes him very difficult to beat. He was surprisingly pushed to three extremely close sets in the Round of 16 by Mario Vilella Martinez and it seems that fatigue is finally catching up to him. It remains to be seen if he has enough left in the tank to win the three matches needed to claim the title, but he enters this match against Mikael Ymer as the big favorite to advance.
Mikael Ymer is ranked a career-high #99 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the 2021 Austria Open. The young Swede has always shown flashes of potential but is finally seeming to put it together with a strong showing last week at the Swiss Open (reaching the Quarters) and this week here in Kitzbuhel. He has started strongly so far, defeating Pablo Cuevas and Alexander Erler in convincing fashion. He has a similar game to his opponent Casper Ruud, with elite movement and relying on baseline play, but he does not quite have the firepower needed to hit through the Norwegian star. While he is the underdog, he will take comfort in the fact that Ruud was pushed to the limit by the unheralded Martinez in the previous round and will hope to do the same and go a bit further.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and all signs are pointing towards a comfortable win for Casper Ruud. The Norwegian looked out of sorts and tired in his Round of 16 win, but he is simply too good to struggle twice in a row against weaker opposition. Fatigue is clearly a factor here and Mikael Ymer is good enough to push him if he isn’t 100%, but I am expecting Ruud to push on and get the straight sets win here. He seems locked in and is the big favorite to win his third consecutive title on the ATP Tour here at the 2021 Austria Open.
