TennisSection previews the 2021 Serbia Open as Matteo Berrettini (2) meets Taro Daniel in the Semi-Finals on Saturday April 24th, 2021.
A very unexpected Semi-Final awaits us at the 2021 Serbia Open. Second seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini will face surprise package Taro Daniel in what seems to be a very one sided match on paper. Will Berrettini get the win as expected, or can Daniel cause the shocking upset and advance to the Final here in Belgrade?
Matteo Berrettini is the second seed here at the 2021 Serbia Open and is currently ranked #10 in the ATP world rankings. After being in poor form and struggling with injuries since the start of the season, he has seemingly gotten back on track with some impressive performances here. The Italian is yet to lose a set so far here in Belgrade, overcoming tough opponents in Marco Cecchinato and Filip Krajinovic to reach this stage. He also reached the doubles Semi-Finals, and the fact that he even entered that event shows that he is fully injury free. His huge serve and forehand are weapons on any surface and he enters this match as the overwhelming favorite over the much lower-ranked Taro Daniel who has surprised many by reaching this far.
Taro Daniel of Japan is currently ranked #117 in the world rankings and has taken everyone by surprise by reaching the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Serbia Open. After coming through the qualifying rounds, he has impressively navigated his way through the draw, notably defeating #7 seed John Millman in the Round of 16. He played extremely well in the Quarter-Finals to defeat Delbonis, coming from a break down in the third set to claim the victory. Once ranked as high as #64, he has seen his ranking slide in recent years and will be delighted with this result, which will catapult him back into the top #100. While he has been in outstanding form, he comes up against his toughest test in Matteo Berrettini in the Semi-Finals and enters the match as the huge underdog. After the week that he has had however, he will believe that anything is possible.
This will be the second time that the two players have faced each other on the ATP Tour, with Taro Daniel leading the head to head series 1-0. They last played in 2018 in Istanbul, with the Japanese winning in straight sets on clay. Their careers have gone in totally different trajectories since then however, and Berrettini is the massive favorite here. I see nothing to suggest otherwise, and I expect Matteo Berrettini to win comfortably here to reach the Final here at the 2021 Serbia Open. Taro Daniel is a solid player but lacks the firepower necessary to trouble the Italian and he should win in two straight sets, reaching his first ATP Final of the year.
