Cameron Norrie got a very solid win in his first match in straight sets, following up his great week in Delray Beach where he lifted the trophy. I expect Norrie to get through this one coming up against John Isner, but it will not be easy. He just bested Opelka a few days ago, so it’s clear he can play around the big servers, but Isner is a different kind of player than Opelka is. Norrie will be very happy though that the court here is incredibly slow, allowing him to actually dig into some of the service games, let’s see if he can take this one to move on to the last eight of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
John Isner saved a match point against Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, in order to take him down in 3 tiebreakers in the end. He has a very tough one ahead of him in Cameron Norrie. He may be tired from his long encounter, especially at his age, and it doesn’t help that the courts here don’t help his serve as much as normal, the slow court speed is actually quite perfect for Norrie, especially in this matchup. I expect Norrie to take him down in the end and book himself a quarterfinal spot at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Cameron Norrie and John Isner have met 3 times before, with John Isner leading the head to head 2-1. Norrie took their first meeting a few years ago on the clay, with Isner taking their next two meetings on pretty fast courts in some close matches. This court though will help Norrie a lot, he’s also keen on what to do against big servers having taken down Opelka, as well as facing an Isner who will likely be quite tired. All conditions seem to be favoring him as the Brit aims to take him down and progress to the next stage of the 2022 Acapulco Open.
