TennisSection preview the 2021 Moselle Open as Hubert Hurkacz (1) faces Lucas Pouille in the Round of 16 on Thursday September 23rd, 2021.
Top seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland begins his 2021 Moselle Open campaign against unseeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille. He has been having a career year, and will be aiming to end the year on a high over these next couple months. Hurkacz is the main title contender here and will be expecting to make a deep run here, can the former world #10 Pouille cause the upset? Or will Hurkaz advance as expected to the Quarter-Finals here in Metz?
Hubert Hurkacz is the number one seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #13 on the ATP Tour. The Polish star has been having a fantastic season, reaching his first Grand Slam Semi-Final at Wimbledon and claiming his maiden Masters-1000 title at the Miami Open earlier in the year. He has been a bit inconsistent since, and will be hoping to put some wins together as he aims to win a title or two before the end of the year and potentially breaking into the top 10 of the world rankings. His huge serve and groundstrokes are tailor made for this quick indoor surface, and if he can keep his error count low he should really be a force to be reckoned with at this event. He is the big favorite here against his Round of 16 opponent Lucas Pouille but would be wise to not underestimate him due to his top 10 pedigree.
Lucas Pouille is a former highly ranked player who currently finds himself ranked outside the top 100 at #142. He has had a dreadful past few seasons and has really fallen off from where he used to be. Now splitting his time between the ATP and Challenger Tours, he got off to a slow start here at the 2021 Moselle Open, defeating Canadian Qualifier Brayden Schnur in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Still a highly talented player, he has missed a large chunk of last season due to an elbow injury which still bothers him from time to time, so he will be hoping to keep a clean bill of health to wrap the season up. He is the massive underdog here against world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz and will need to draw on every ounce of his experience to get him through here.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Hurkacz leading the head to head 2-1. They played each other three times in 2019, splitting the hard court matches and the Pole winning on clay, however they have never faced off on this surface. I am expecting a comfortable win for the world number 13 here. He quite simply is the better player at this stage of their careers, and that fact coupled with the surface should allow him to come away with a routing victory. Lucas Pouille is still capable of some solid tennis but he lacks the firepower that he would need to win here, and I don’t think he will have any answer from his opponent’s booming serve and powerful groundstrokes. Hubert Hurkacz will win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Moselle Open.
