TennisSection previews the 2022 Wimbledon as Miomir Kecmanovic takes on John Millman in the first round on Monday, June 27th, 2022.
Miomir Kecmanovic has difficult opener at the 2022 Wimbledon. The former Junior World No. 1 has drawn Australia’s workhorse in John Millman. Will the Serbian 25thseed overcome the challenge or will Millman showcase his grass-court nous?
Miomir Kecmanovic had a less convincing grass court season in the build up to the 2022 Wimbledon. The Serbian World No. 30 has put together a career-best on the ATP tour, sailing to a career high ranking and recording 27 match wins in the first half of the season. His record at Grand Slam level in 2022 makes for pretty good reading. Kecmanovic benefitted from compatriot Djokovic’s withdrawal from the Australian Open (since he was slated to face him in the first round), and went on to make the fourth round for the first time. At the French Open, he advanced into the third round, losing to the World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. His two defeats in Halle and Mallorca have dealt him a hammer blow in his quest to go deep at Wimbledon, and he is not expected to have an easy ride when he takes on John Millman.
John Millman, by contrast, secured some much-needed momentum heading to the 2022 Wimbledon. Millman qualified for the main draw at Eastbourne, and scored a fine win over Sebastian Korda in the first round, earning a shot at redemption for his first-round exit at the French Open against the same opponent. The Australian World No. 86 will be making his seventh main draw appearance at SW19. Millman has advanced into the second round in four of his six previous visits, so he cannot be ruled out to fashion an upset.
Miomir Kecmanovic leads John Millman 2-1 in their head-to-head. Kecmanovic has won their last two meetings include their Round of 16 match in Belgrade earlier this year. Millman should be brimming with confidence for this year’s Wimbledon after a decent showing in Eastbourne, but by dint of ranking, I have to side with Kecmanovic in this one.
