TennisSection previews the 2021 Munich Open as Alexander Zverev (1) meets Ilya Ivashka in the Quarter-Finals on Friday April 30th, 2021.
Top seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany will face Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in the Quarter-Finals at the 2021 Munich Open. Can the Qualifier Ivashka continue his run here in Bavaria with a stunning upset? Or will the #1 seed advance here at home with ease as expected?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #6 in the ATP world rankings and is the top seed here at the 2021 Munich Open. He has had a disappointing season so far in 2021 and will be hoping that playing at home will improve his fortunes. The German star is a former two-time champion here in Munich and will be hoping to claim his second title of the year after his success in Acapulco. He cruised to victory in the Round of 16 over Ricardas Berankis, easily winning 6-2, 6-4. Zverev dominated the match from start to finish, being particularly impressive with his return game where he won more than half the points on his opponent’s serve. Zverev enters this match against Qualifier Ilya Ivashka as the heavy favorite and is expected to advance to the Semi-Finals here in Munich.
Ilya Ivashka came through the Qualifying Rounds here at the 2021 Munich Open, and has been in a rich vein of form lately. The Belarusian reached the Quarter-Finals in Andalucia, and followed that up with an impressive three set loss to Rafael Nadal in Barcelona. He has brought that form here into the Munich Open, defeating strong opponents in Mackenzie McDonald and Emil Ruusuvuori en route to the Quarter-Finals. Ivashka has powerful, flat groundstrokes that can make life uncomfortable for his opponents, especially from the forehand wing. While he enters this match as the heavy underdog against top seed Alexander Zverev, he has some serious momentum on his side and should not be written off.
This will be the first time the two men have faced each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. The top seed Alexander Zverev is heavily favored to win here, and is the favorite to win the title here at the 2021 Munich Open. While Ilya Ivashka is the clear underdog here, he is having a great run recently on this surface, and has the potential to cause the German some problems. I expect this to be a relatively tight match, but Alexander Zverev will ultimately come through and win in two close sets. He has been disappointing this season but I expect him to win the title here, giving him a much needed confidence boost for the rest of the season. Alexander Zverev will win here and advance to the Semi-Finals at the 2021 Munich Open.
