TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Matteo Berrettini meets Ugo Humbert on Tuesday January 4th, 2022 (January 3rd, 2022 at 8:20pm EST).
Powerhouses Italy and France will clash here at the 2022 ATP Cup and both have work to do if they are to avoid being knocked out of the competition. Both teams suffered losses in their first tie and will be eager to win here and keep their hopes alive. Matteo Berrettini and Ugo Humbert will square off in the #1 Singles spot, who will win and claim an all-important point for their country?
Matteo Berrettini is the number one Italian player and is currently ranked #7 on the ATP Tour. The big serving star had a breakout season in 2021, reaching his maiden Grand Slam Final at Wimbledon and capturing his first ATP 500 title at Queens. He will be one of the dark horse candidates for the Australian Open and will be eager to find form and momentum ahead of the event. However, he was stunned in his first match against hometown hero Alex de Minaur during Australia’s upset over Italy. He committed more errors than he would have liked in that match, and will have to be much better to get by Ugo Humbert who himself scored the biggest victory of his career by beating world number two Daniil Medvedev in his first match of the 2022 ATP Cup.
Ugo Humbert is ranked #35 on the ATP Tour and has long been considered one of the most talented young players in the world. The 23 year old Frenchman has shown flashes in the past but has largely failed to live up to his potential thus far on the pro circuit. We are expecting big things of the Frenchman in 2022, and he repaid that faith here at the 2022 ATP Cup where he shocked the world by beating Daniil Medvedev. If he can sustain this kind of form he is more than capable of producing yet another upset here over Matteo Berrettini at the 2022 ATP Cup.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 1-0. This is shaping up to be a fascinating match here at the 2022 ATP Tour with Berrettini not quite up to speed and Humbert off to a flying start this season. It is very hard to pick a winner here as they seem extremely evenly matched, but we are going to side with experience here, and back Matteo Berrettini. Ugo Humbert is in fantastic form and will make things incredibly difficult, but the Italian is a seasoned warrior and will get it going eventualy here in Sydney. Expect a fierce battle, with the Italian getting a hard-fought victory.
