TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Maxime Cressy in the Round of 16 on Monday, January 24th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Maxime Cressy pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the top seed and favorite for the title taking on a surprise fourth round opponent. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Australian Open?
Daniil Medvedev has been in fantastic form all tournament, playing the match of the tournament vs. Kyrgios in the second round, carrying over that level to this third round match vs. van de Zandschulp, crushing him in straights. I expect him to present a very similar pattern here vs Maxime Cressy. Cressy relies on serving big and coming to the net often. Medvedev stands very far back where he can neutralize that kind of game, and Cressy can obviously do very little against the service of Medvedev. Let’s see if the top seed can meet expectations and continue to cruise through the draw as he aims to make the quarterfinals here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Maxime Cressy has gotten some solid wins to get here, but he really hasn’t played too great of players. He now is taking on the greatest player in the tournament in terms of current form, and he has almost no chance. Medvedev will be standing far back, and Cressy won’t be able to do what he wants against him on serve, he could force a tiebreak or a couple close sets just because of his serve, but Medvedev will swipe him aside either way due to his incredible service where he will struggle very little, on top of his insane reach on the return and due to his speed where he can just casually put the ball past Cressy. Let’s see if the World No. 2 can take down Cressy and book his spot in the last eight at the 2022 Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Maxime Cressy have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. As I’ve already covered, it’s a poor matchup for Cressy. Medvedev will enjoy playing someone like Cressy who isn’t able to be aggressive on that many of Medvedev’s balls from the back of the court. Medvedev is the favorite to win the tournament, and he’s looked to be in incredible form all week, and he will undoubtedly continue that form as he aims to continue storming through the draw to take his campaign all the way to the trophy here at the 2022 Australian Open.
