TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round on Saturday, May 28th, 2022.
Could this be the stage where Daniil Medvedev falters at the French Open? There are plenty of reasons why the upset could happen on Saturday as in-form Miomir Kecmanovic continues to rise in the global ranks of men’s tennis. Who will prevail?
Daniil Medvedev will be playing in just his fourth match on the European clay since recovering from hernia surgery. And in fairness, it hasn’t taken him long to establish a foothold in the tournament. Medvedev who suffered a shock defeat to Richard Gasquet in Geneva advanced into the third round of the French Open with a solid 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over Laslo Djere. In a match that pundits and many fans felt the Russian could stumble, he proved a class above Serbia’s Djere, playing as many balls back and dictating the rallies from the baseline with excellent intuition. His first big test should come in his next match when he takes on the fast-improving Miomir Kecmanovic.
Miomir Kecmanovic, for his part, came through a very tricky second-round match against the flashy Alexander Bublik. Kecmanovic, who is playing as a seeded player in a Grand Slam for the first time, recovered from a set down to knock out the Kazakh in four sets. He was a monster behind the return as he broke Bublik ten times from 19 opportunities. The 22-year-old will need to break new ground on Saturday, having never advanced beyond the second round at the French Open in each of his last three trips.
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev and Miomir Kecmanovic have not clashed before on the ATP Tour. Medvedev enters their first collision at the French Open as the huge favorite with the oddsmakers. However, there is decent value in backing the Serbian young gun in this match. He is playing the best tennis of his short career and has been putting up impressive numbers behind his serve and return this week. Medvedev has only just returned from a long layoff and while he looked sharp in his last two outings, there were a few jittery moments in the win over Djere. I reckon Kecmanovic could pull off the upset.
