TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open Open as Andy Murray takes on Richard Gasquet in the Round of 64 on Monday, August 16th, 2021.
Will Andy Murray get some good matches under his belt early on here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open as he aims to find some form before the US Open at the end of the month? Will Richard Gasquet come out here ready to use the momentum he gained during qualifying to get a big win under his belt in the opening round? Both players are very experienced and know each other quite well, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Who will it be?
Andy Murray returns to the Singles tour on the ATP Tour in over a month and a half as he last played a Singles match at Wimbledon. Andy cannot compete week in and week out anymore because he cannot afford to hurt his body. Therefore, Murray plays one or two tournaments before a big tournament to find some form and then be ready for the bigger tournaments. Murray enters the 2021 Cincinnati Open knowing he could have had an easier start to the draw as he was scheduled to meet a qualifier, but the qualifier he is meeting is the very experienced and flamboyant Richard Gasquet. Murray will have to be at his best and wear off the rust right from the start.
Richard Gasquet put on some very solid performances in the qualifying rounds here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open, beating two Spaniards, Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar, to get his spot in the main draw. Richard should not have to play qualifying rounds, but unfortunately he has not won enough matches this year to be ranked high enough to get himself into all tournaments main draw. Richard will be in good form with a few matches under his belt, so we know he will not be rusty and he will use his superb one-handed backhand to aim to move Andy Murray around the court here and get himself further at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet have met 12 times before, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 8-4. They have not met since 2019 where Gasquet won in this same tournament in straight sets. I expect a win for Richard Gasquet here because he is higher ranked than Andy Murray, he has won more matches than Murray this year, and he has gotten 2 wins under his belt here in Cincinnati already. This will allow him to have the confidence and rhythm necessary coming into this match, whilst Murray will be wearing off rust and trying to find his footing on these hard courts. I do expect a tight match because Murray is no pushover, but Richard will make his way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
