TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as John Isner takes on Cristian Garin in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 11th, 2021.
Will John Isner continue his great form from his last match? Will Cristian Garin prove he’s more than a clay courter? This match would be a big win for Garin, who wants to show that he can play his ranking anywhere, and it would be a nice win for John Isner to take down a top ranked opponent. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
John Isner managed to rail through Davidovich Fokina in the first round, not even needing a tiebreak throughout the match, and winning the 2nd set 6-1. These are incredible numbers for someone like John Isner who primarily relies on his service to get through matches, while it does show that his opponent did not play his best, it also showed how John was able to capitalize on opportunities that he did get. Cristian Garin should definitely really focus on holding his serve, as opportunities will be scarce on the Isner serve, he’ll need to just try and hold efficiently and put pressure on Isner to serve it out in the tiebreakers. It’s an interesting match-up, a tall player who relies on his serve and flat powerful groundstrokes, vs. a more grindy player who likes longer engagements with heavy topspin. Match-ups like these can go different ways, but this one may favor John Isner just because of the conditions and the way in which he played in his first match at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Cristian Garin has a tough match on his hands, it’s always a hard one against someone like John Isner, where you need to capitalize on your opportunities as they will be so rare, so he really needs to make sure his service doesn’t falter. Players often get rather nervous playing him and play a bad service game or two, which in turn practically costs them the entire set. If Isner’s serve is on, Garin should just focus on not being broken and making limited unforced errors on his serve, just trying to outlast him in the tiebreaks. But it will be a hard one, as Garin enjoys the clay courts quite a bit, however Toronto is a rather slow hard court, so Garin should feel like he can outlast Isner in lots of different situations come Wednesday at the 2021 Toronto Open.
John Isner And Cristian Garin have met twice before, with Cristian Garin leading the head to head 2-0. These numbers are actually super impressive from Garin, considering their first match was played here at the last edition of the Toronto Open in 2019, where he was able to win 6-3 6-4. They also played on a very fast court in Paris that same year, with Garin winning in 2 tiebreakers. Considering the fact that Cristian is playing better than he was two years ago, he should have a good gameplan in his mind and feel pretty confident that he’ll be able to make few unforced errors, and place his serves well to make sure he doesn’t get into any unlucky situations which would see him get broken. It’s a tough one to call, considering the form of John Isner but also the history of the two and considering it’s pretty recent. However, just due to the conditions it may be a safe bet to back up Cristian Garin to take the win here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
