TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Matteo Berrettini (9) meets Soonwoo Kwon in the Round of 32 on Saturday, June 5th 2021.
Will Soonwoo Kwon get his best result at a Grand Slam under his belt as he looks to make the Round of 32 and cash that big check? Will Matteo Berrettini continue cruising through his matches here at Roland Garros as he looks to now be the favourite to make the quarter finals from his 1/8 of the draw? Who will come out on top between these two young guns and make their way to the next round of the 2021 French Open?
Soonwoo Kwon has been playing some very solid tennis this week at Roland Garros, beating Kevin Anderson in the Round of 128 and now beating Andreas Seppi in the Round of 64 in straight sets 6-4/7-5/7-5. That is two experienced players of the game, and Soonwoo Kwon will take this as a very positive sign that he is going in the right direction in his career. Soonwoo is not very well known, and mainly focuses on ATP 250 tournaments. Kwon will now be aiming to get the biggest win of his career under his belt by beating a Top 10 player in Matteo Berrettini, as well as making his way to the Round of 32 of a Grand Slam for the first time. Can he do it?
Matteo Berrettini has been in cruise control here at the 2021 French Open (except in that third set in his Round of 128 match), beating his opponents with such determination. In the Round of 64, Matteo Berrettini beat Federico Coria in straight sets 6-3/6-3/6-2. The Italian did not waste any time on court doing what he knew he should be doing, and he will take a lot of positives from that match, being able to dominate the match from the start, and not letting go of the lead once he had it. Matteo is great on all surfaces, which is rare amongst tennis players nowadays, and I am sure he will be looking at his opponents, such as Soonwoo Kwon, and the rest of his 1/8th of the draw and feeling that he can make his way to the quarter-finals if need be.
Matteo Berrettini and Soonwoo Kwon have never met before, with this being their first encounter. Although Soonwoo Kwon has been playing some strong tennis this week, beating two experienced opponents, he will not hold a candle to the power, determination, and accuracy of Matteo Berrettini’s game. Matteo is improving a lot since his return from injury, and he will want to build momentum here at Roland Garros. This means not letting easy matches drag on and potentially putting doubts in his game. Matteo will want to dominate from start to finish and get it done quickly to make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 French Open.
