TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Radu Albot in the third round on Friday, January 21st, 2022.
Will Alexander Zverev continue to underline his Australian Open title bid with another win? Or will Radu Albot post the biggest match win of his career? Zverev is looking unstoppable right now, and the Moldovan Albot will be fully aware.
Alexander Zverev ended John Millman’s 2022 Australian Open participation under the lights on Rod Laver Arena. The German third seed powered his way into the third round with an emphatic 6-4 6-4 6-0. Zverev committed a lot of unforced errors (38 to be exact), but did offset it with an equally high rate on the winners count. Zverev admitted in his post-match interview that his tactic was always to hit the ball as hard as he possibly could to breach Millman’s defenses. The pair of them had fought tooth and nail in their last meeting at the French Open in 2019 – a match that lasted four and half hours. Zverev will next play Moldova’s finest in Radu Albot.
Radu Albot came thorugh in straight sets, and also against an Australian opponent in Aleksandar Vukic. The Moldovan has fond memories of the Australian Open. Last year he reached the third round against the odds, as he pulled off a major upset on day one by beating Bautista Agut. This time, he has repeated that feat and more impressively after going through the hurdle of qualifying. Albot was broken just once against Vukic as he took down the wild card in front of his cheerful crowd.
Alexander Zverev leads Radu Albot 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match was played in the first round of the US Open in 2019. Back then, Zverev was synonymous for cracking under the tiniest bit of pressure while performing on a big stage. Zverev’s Grand Slam career cried for a turning point and he seemed to have turned a corner in recent years. The German should be able to navigate his way into the Round of 16 with very little resistance.
