Wimbledon 2022: Denis Shapovalov vs. Arthur Rinderknech Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Wimbledon as Denis Shapovalov takes on Arthur Rinderknech in the first round on Tuesday, June 28th, 2022.

Will Denis Shapovalov overcome his barren spell and get his season back on track at Wimbledon? Or will Arthur Rinderknech stretch the Canadian’s winless streak even further? While an upset is very much on the table here, the Canadian will need to raise his game to avoid it.

These are testing times as far as Denis Shapovalov is concerned. The Canadian lefty arrives at Wimbledon in terrible form. Shapovalov has lost his last six matches on the trot, his worst sequence of results for quite some time. What is even more perplexing is that he was the favorite in each of his last five matches, but lost each time to a lower-ranked opponent. Shapovalov reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at last year’s Wimbledon. Who knows, maybe a return to SW19 could reignite his season which as you remember, started so well Down Under.

Arthur Rinderknech fits the mould as the sort of player capable of producing a giant-killing upset on Tuesday. The French power hitter has a powerful first serve and some fluid groundstrokes particularly on his forehand. However, he does not have an inspiring record on grass and arrives at Wimbledon following a qualifying round defeat to Marc Huesler in Halle. His sole Grand Slam main draw win this season came in January when he defeated Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Australian Open.

Denis Shapovalov and Arthur Rinderknech are currently tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Rinderknech won their last meeting on the hard courts of the Qatar Open in straight sets. I think Shapovalov will get his season moving in the right direction here. Granted the Frenchman has the tools to make life problematic for the Canadian, I still expect Shapovalov to make use of his wealth of experience at Grand Slam level to outsmart his opponent.
