WTA Finals 2021: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Paula Badosa Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 WTA Finals as Aryna Sabalenka takes on Paula Badosa in the Round Robin Stage on Thursday, November 11th, 2021.

Will Aryna Sabalenka get the win? Will Paula Badosa upset the top seed? This is far from a straightforward opening match for the Belarusian at the WTA Finals. She has confessed to the difficult conditions in Guadalajara and the potential for an upset cannot be ruled out in this match.

Aryna Sabalenka won the WTA’s first tournament in 2021 in Abu Dhabi. Will she win the last event on the calendar? The odds are pretty short and in her favor. Sabalenka is the oddsmakers’ favorite to land silverware at the end of the week, but given the rush in the past couple of weeks, it might be worth another look at the other participants. Granted the Belarusian has been one of the most consistent performers this year (with two titles to show for it), there is a cloud of uncertainty surrounding Sabalenka’s form. Since reaching the semifinals of the US Open, Sabalenka made a short-lived cameo at the Kremlin Cup where she was beaten in the quarterfinals. She was forced to sit out from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells due to COVID-19. Recovery has been steady, but Sabalenka could come unstuck against the in-form Paula Badosa on Thursday.

While Aryna Sabalenka’s struggles have been documented in the past few weeks, Paula Badosa has enjoyed a meteoric rise. The Manhattan-born Spaniard won the biggest title of her career in Indian Wells last month. That fortnight in California steered Badosa for a deserved berth at the WTA Finals. Badosa would also crack the WTA’s Top 10 for the first time in her career. Will she put the icing on the cake by winning the WTA Finals? Badosa brings a six-match winning streak in Guadalajara, but she has a modest 4-3 record on an indoor hard court in 2021. She is, however, the third favorite according to the bookies to triumph.

Paula Badosa leads Aryna Sabalenka 1-0 in their head-to-head. The match was played just a few months ago at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Having started the year without a single Top 10 win, Badosa has scored four in the space of three months during the second half of the campaign. Fitness permitting, Sabalenka should hold an edge over the aggressive Spaniard. But if the Belarusian struggles to find her range in the altitude, Badosa has the tools to make life problematic for the top seed.
