Montreal Masters 2022: Marin Cilic vs. Tommy Paul Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Montreal Masters as Marin Cilic takes on Tommy Paul in the third round on Thursday, August 11th, 2022.

Will Marin Cilic reach his first quarterfinal at the Montreal Masters? Or will Tommy Paul back up his career-best win over Carlos Alcaraz by taking down another seed? This should be an entertaining battle to determine one of our quarterfinalists at the National Bank Open. Who will prevail?

Marin Cilic, despite being short on match fitness, showed none of that at the Montreal Masters. He eased past Borna Coric in the first round (beating his fellow Croat for the eighth time in the head-to-head), and then improved his record over Karen Khachanov to 3-2 with a routine 6-3 6-2 win. He won 85% first-serve points and fired five aces. He also converted three of his six break points to advance. Cilic has not gone beyond the Round of 16 in these parts and will face Carlos Alcaraz’sconqueror in Tommy Paul.

After thwarting Carlos Alcaraz’s power, Tommy Paul must feel untouchable. Nobody saw it coming especially when his back was against the wall in that match. Alcaraz led by a set and a break and even had a match point, but that did not stop Paul from losing any incentive in the match. Paul kept plugging away and one loose game in the second set by his Spanish opponent gave him a route back in the match. The American won the second set in a tiebreak and deservedly outplayed Alcaraz in the decider to win 6-7 7-6 6-3 for his career-best win.

Marin Cilic leads Tommy Paul 2-0 in their head-to-head. Cilicwon their most recent meeting in January at the Adelaide International in three sets. I don’t think Paul will be fazed by Cilic’s power off the ground after doing so well against Alcaraz. He nullified Alcaraz’s biggest strengths by his consistent ball striking from deep. But this would a tall order to repeat that display especially after spending over three hours on court. Ciliclooks poised to reach his first quarterfinal at the Montreal Masters.
