TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, January 26th, 2021.
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas get the win? Will Jannik Sinner pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the World No. 4 looking vulnerable as the brutal hitter and next-gen hope from Italy aims to take him down. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Australian Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas managed to clinch out the win against Taylor Fritz in 5 sets, coming back from 2 sets to 1 down to reach the quarterfinal. He has a very hard match ahead of him in Jannik Sinner, and I do not expect him to get through this one. Sinner has been playing incredibly well, while Tsitsipas’ performance has been clearly below the level he should be playing at. Sinner is hitting the ball with such depth, especially on the backhand side where he will really hurt Tsitsipas who has been hitting his backhand especially poorly. Let’s see if the Top Greek can manage to keep going and get past the young Italian to back up his semifinal spot from last year at the 2022 Australian Open.
Jannik Sinner got a great win over de Minaur, playing his best tennis yet. He hit the ball huge, which is exactly what he has to do against Tsitsipas, the backhand to backhand exchanges he will dominate, and that alone will allow him to capitalize on so many opportunities. Sinner is not yet ready for a major title in my eyes, and he can have many mental lapses in his game, but Tsitsipas is vulnerable and it’s impossible to ignore the level he’s played at. I expect him to of course have trouble, but to ultimately pull off the upset and reach his first ever grand slam semifinal.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner have met 3 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-1. All their meetings have come on the clay, and one of them came in 2019, so this head to head really won’t indicate anything considering Tsitsipas is the current Roland Garros finalist. Sinner will outhit Tsitsipas from the back of the court, the only way Tsitsipas can manage to keep going is if he plays quick points, and with the way he’s hitting his backhand I don’t think it’ll be possible as the young Italian aims to reach his first ever grand slam semifinal, taking down the World No. 4 and extending his memorable stay in Melbourne at the 2022 Australian Open.
