TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, January 26th, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a rematch of the 2021 US Open semifinal. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Australian Open?
Daniil Medvedev got a pretty solid win over Maxime Cressy, taking him down in 4 sets. He did drop a set, but Cressy put on an inspired performance, serving huge and hitting some clutch volleys at the net. Medvedev put on quite the performance to break him in the fourth set, staying consistent with his serve and putting in a lot of returns. He had an incredible winners-unforced errors ratio, hitting 60 winners to just 11 unforced errors. He does not have an easy quarterfinal ahead of him as he aims to take down Felix Auger-Aliassime. He is the clear favorite considering their head to head and the way they’ve played so far, but FAA will really be able to damage him with how big he serves and with how aggressive he can be. Still, Medvedev likes to play the kind of game FAA produces, so I only give FAA one set max as Medvedev aims to take down FAA and book himself back to back semifinals at the 2022 Australian Open.
Felix Auger-Aliassime got a nice win over Cilic, dropping the first set to take him down in 4. He definitely has worried me all tournament, needing 5 setters and dropping a set 6-2 like that against Cilic shows his inconsistencies. There will be no room for that coming up against World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev. FAA will have to serve to perfection and finish points quickly, that’s the only way he can win. Medvedev really likes playing FAA because he can get into the rallies and wait for FAA to make some sort of mistake, and considering the top seed has been implementing many aggressive elements into his game as well, I really doubt there’s much he can do to stop the rampage of the Russian as he aims to continue his campaign to a 2nd grand slam title at the 2022 Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Felix Auger-Aliassime have met 3 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-0. Their first meeting came in Toronto in 2018 and is rather irrelevant, but Medvedev won it anyway. Their last two meetings were in the US Open semifinal last year, where Medvedev won very easily. The 2nd set was competitive, and FAA had his chance to win it, he had a set point but once again he showed his mental fortitude is rather lackluster, really slowing him down against a player like Medvedev. I think FAA can push him, and at this point it’s unfair to simply say Medvedev will crush him, but I think a similar pattern is likely considering Medvedev even bageled him at the ATP Cup a couple weeks ago. Let’s see if Medvedev can race to the title down under to claim his first Australian Open title and reach World No. 1 in the rankings for the first time as we near the finish line at the 2022 Australian Open.
