TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open Open as Dan Evans takes on Lucas Pouille in the Round of 32 on Tuesday August 24th, 2021.
Will Dan Evans kick off his campaign with a nice win? Will Lucas Pouille pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Evans has the level to be a title contender. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Salem Open?
Dan Evans has not been playing his best tennis as of late, despite starting off at a very high level earlier on in the year. Here he has a great opportunity against Lucas Pouille to just get some confidence though and get a solid win where we will see if his level is high enough to go all the way. He’s been struggling to often just put the ball back in the court, making many unforced errors since Wimbledon of this year, which could very well be a mental thing. I do expect him to regroup though, and use his great serve and forehand, moving his slice around the court to throw off Pouille and get the win. With Lucas hardly playing professional tennis in recent times, I definitely like Evans’ chances to get a nice easy win underway at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Lucas Pouille got a nice win today over Feliciano Lopez, defeating him 6-1 6-4. He has a very tough one ahead of him though, facing someone who is younger, ranked much higher and playing at a much better level at the moment. At his best, Lucas is a fantastic player, but it will be a very hard task against Dan Evans, where getting ahold of any opportunities will be very difficult, much less capitalizing on them. While he definitely has the chance to get the win here, especially with Evans not playing too well recently, it won’t be easy for him at all, he will need to serve very well, which he was able to do today, although granted the opponent will not be nearly as good as Evans will be. The serve will definitely have to be on point and he’ll need to back it up with aggressive play, which is the best way to defeat Evans, let’s see if he can push the number three seed here at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Dan Evans and Lucas Pouille have met once before, with Dan Evans leading the head to head 1-0. Their one and only meeting came two years ago at the 2019 edition of the US Open, with Evans winning in 4 sets. Right now Evans is definitely playing a lot better than he was then, with Pouille playing worse nowadays. If Dan could do that on the hardcourts of America in those conditions, it’s definitely tough to see how Lucas will be able to find any answers. I think it will mostly depend on how aggressive Evans plays, if he uses his forehand to create problems for Lucas and hits winners with it, then I really don’t think Pouille has much of a chance, however, if Dan plays more conservative, I like Pouille’s chances to present many problems and ask questions of Evans to see if he can pull off the upset at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. However, that seems very unlikely as the Frenchman hasn’t been at his best recently, so Dan Evans should get the win here, advancing to the Round of 16.
