TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarterfinals on Friday, October 15th, 2021.
Will Stefanos Tsitsipas move on? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight contest with one of the top players in the world facing a player who can beat anybody on his day. Who will move onto the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Stefanos Tsitsipas played a solid match to storm back against de Minaur after dropping the first. He showed a high level and good mental resolve, still, he’s already dropped sets against a couple of players who are not playing at the level of Nikoloz Basilashvili. Tsitsipas could get into some trouble here, as Basilashvili has a much better backhand than Tsitsipas, which is for sure the only clear weakness in the physical game of Tsitsipas. While I do expect it to be tight, as he just hasn’t been playing that great, and Basilashvili has been playing some great tennis, Tsitsipas isn’t world no. 3 for no reason, so I do expect him to ultimately clinch out the win and move on to the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili played a great match against Khachanov, taking him out in a tight 2 sets. With the level he’s shown today, he has a shot at taking out Stefanos Tsitsipas, but it will not be easy. If Basilashvili serves big and consistently to the backhand wing of Tsitsipas, then I love his chances to hold serve a lot, but the problem is, Basilashvili isn’t the most consistent server, so that’s already going to be tough. His whole plan will essentially revolve around getting into backhand exchanges with him, as his two-handed rocket of a backhand is just a better shot. It won’t be easy to get into those situations though, so I do expect Tsitsipas to edge him out and move on at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met 2 times, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-0. Both meetings came in 2019, when Basilashvili was having the worst year of his life, and Tsitsipas was already a rising star. Both matches saw both players winning sets, with Tsitsipas ultimately coming out on top. This just shows how bad of a matchup it is for Tsitsipas, so in different conditions, especially on a faster court, I might favor Basilashvili, however, Tsitsipas is just ranked so much higher and has the weapons to get through the tight moments and miss less often. The speed of the court also favors him, so while he will struggle, I think he’ll get through it and book his spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
