TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Cameron Norrie (21) meets Grigor Dimitrov (23) in the Semi-Finals on Saturday October 16th, 2021.
Which of these surprising Semi-Finalists will continue to stun the tennis world and make it to the Final here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open? Cameron Norrie and Grigor Dimitrov have defied all odds and upset higher-ranked opponents to get this far by playing some outstanding tennis. This will be Norrie’s first ever Masters-1000 Semi-Final, while Dimitrov has not been to this stage in a while. Who can keep their nerve to get the win here?
Cameron Norrie is the 21st seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is currently ranked #26 on the ATP Tour. The British number two has been in fantastic form here this week and surely even he would not have expected to reach this stage of the competition. Consecutive three set wins over Tennys Sandgren, Roberto Bautista Agut and Tommy Paul were followed by a shocking 6-0, 6-2 demolition of 11th seeded Diego Schwartzman, a result that really will make everyone sit up and take notice. Norrie is certainly capable of some fantastic tennis, and has been enjoying a breakout year on the ATP Tour with this being his ninth Quarter-Final or better result, and he will be hoping to keep the dream alive by defeating Grigor Dimitrov and advancing to the biggest Final of his career.
Grigor Dimitrov is a former top 5 player that is currently ranked just two spots below Cameron Norrie at #28. The Bulgarian has had a very successful career, but has suffered with injuries and loss of form over the past few seasons, only recently delivering some solid results. While he is still a very good player, no-one would have expected him to still be in the draw at this stage, but he has produced some world-class tennis, with three consecutive upset wins over Reilly Opelka, world number two Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz to reach the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The only worry here is fatigue, as the wins over Medvedev and Hurkacz will have taken a lot out of him, but he seems to be at full fitness and his experience will be instrumental here. He has played some very aggressive tennis, and that will likely be the plan again against the consistent Cameron Norrie, who has no major weapons but is able to get most balls in play and is very strong tactically. This match is extremely even and it is difficult to choose a pre-match favorite, but the edge is likely with Dimitrov as he has been at this stage before.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Cameron Norrie winning their only previous encounter earlier this year at the Miami Open in straight sets. This match is very evenly poised, with both men being very close in the rankings and in some seriously good form. I am expecting a ferocious battle with both men desperate to reach the Final, and while it is very difficult to choose between them, it is hard to look past Grigor Dimitrov’s big match experience here. The Bulgarian has won Masters-1000 events before, and was the 2017 ATP Finals champion. If we are simply looking at their tennis ability there is not much to separate them at the moment, but the gulf in experience is huge and that often is the deciding factor in big matches. It will likely be a very close match, but I am giving the edge to Grigor here, who will win and advance to the Final here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
