Arthur Fils secured his spot in the semifinal of the Lyon Open – his third at ATP level this season – by virtue of his opponent Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrawing from the match due to a shoulder injury. The Canadian reportedly stopped practicing after feeling pain in his shoulder and addressed the crowd in Lyon saying he did not feel competitive in form as a result of the injury. Nonetheless, Fils’ passage into another semifinal on home soil also means that he’ll make his top 100 debut on Monday regardless of his result against Brandon Nakashima. The Next Gen champion had defeated compatriot Tommy Paul in the other quarterfinal, doing so in straight sets. Despite wobbling to victory, Nakashima made amends for failing to serve out the match at 5-4, by winning the second set in a tiebreak. This has been Nakashima’s best week of the season by a mile, and he’s taken out some great names at least on paper. His lack of experience on clay hasn’t been a big drawback and he’s played with a lot more consistency from the baseline. But over the course of the season so far, Fils has been miles ahead. He has a pin-point and powerful serve and can hit big off either wing. His results show he’s not a one-trick pony. If he can marinade his strengths together, there is a fair chance the French youngster will finally get over the semifinal hurdle here.
