Cameron Norrie is two wins away from retaining his title at the Lyon Open. The second-seeded Brit picked up his 27th win of the season in a rematch from last year, beating Sebastian Baez 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to advance. Norrie will now take on another Argentine who is top of the pile in his country and that is Francisco Cerundolo. Ironically, Cerundolo defeated a Brit in Jack Draper, coming from a set and break down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and breaks the quarterfinal barrier for the first time this season. Cerundolo knocked off Norrie in straight sets in Monte-Carlo last month. And while Norrie holds an excellent record at this tournament, Cerundolo possesses the weaponry to hurt the British lefty in longer duels. But Cerundolo was atrocious on serve on Thursday, serving seven double faults and giving away nine break points. He was extremely fortunate to come through that second set against Draper and while I feel Norrie won’t be as forgiving, it won’t be smooth sailing. It’s a rematch from last season at this very tournament, but I’d expect a lot more from Cerundolo given the huge strides he’s taken since he lost to Norrie in straights a year ago.
