TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Ilya Ivashka in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021.
Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Ilya Ivashka pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two players with two crushing playstyles coming to a clash. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Andrey Rublev is coming off of a couple tough losses at the Kremlin Cup and at Indian Wells, having lost matches where he really should have won. Rublev has great potential, but he hasn’t been putting it on full display lately, making reckless errors and not really serving as well as he was not too long ago. That’s why it will be a really tough one coming up against Ilya Ivashka, who plays a game rather similar to his. Ivashka is one of the most improved players of the year, and if Rublev does not step up his game, he could very well be in trouble. Rublev has mainly been struggling with simply being consistent, he needs to take all the pure aggression off of his really flat groundstrokes, and simply play in a more disciplined manner, focusing on making just as many balls as he is going for winners. I expect Rublev to have regrouped by now, so I do think he will clinch this one out, but it won’t be an easy one as he fights for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Ilya Ivashka got a great win to set this really tough meeting up with the number one seed and the defending champion. While if this match was set in completely normal circumstances, Ivashka would be feeling rather hopeless, these are not normal circumstances. Rublev has not been playing too well, and Ivashka has all the weapons to make him feel uncomfortable. If Ivashka is able to serve as well as he did against Djere, and he is able to take the ball early and try to really pound the second serve return, then he has a real shot at the king. However, Rublev is ranked where he is for a reason, and I expect him to be playing better by this point, so it will be a really tough one for Ivashka as he attempts to fight for a place in the next round at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Andrey Rublev and Ilya Ivashka have met once before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at this very event during its 2019 edition, with Rublev storming back from a set down to take it. Neither player was anything compared to what they are now, but if that meeting proves anything, it proves that the two are a tight matchup, considering their playstyles are quite similar. Rublev is simply doing it at a higher level on a more consistent basis. This should be a fun one, and I fully expect it to go the distance, let’s see if Rublev can get back into form and clinch this one out to book his spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
